Happy Shiny People - Zuzanne Neziri

So disliked and derided by some was R.E.M's 1991 big hit single, Shiny, Happy People, singer Michael Stipe is said to have asked it be left off their 'Best Of' album in 2003.

Whether the song was mean to be ironic or not, in the following years the cynicism with which the song may have been originally met may well have turned to a relief that we are actually capable of smiling given the potential futures described by politicians, scientists and environmentalists.

Zuzanna Neziri's photographic portraits seem to bridge the space between posed publicity shots and the open expressions captured when a person is relaxed and unaware of the camera, when the artificial becomes real.

Zuzanna Neziri is a final year PR and Communication student at Sheffield Hallam University. She grew up in Wroclaw, Poland.
